Buena Park Raceway 6161 Lincoln ave.
SoCal USRA Scale Race August 25, 2001 Scale racers from around SoCal converged on Buena Park Raceway to battle on their legendary King track. After struggling early in the season Duran Trujillo returned to form and won three out of four expert races. Duran finished second to Roy Hood in GT-12 but otherwise had a perfect weekend. Horsepower was the order of the day and with the dizzying speeds came horrendous wrecks and several races were decided by broken parts, bent chassis and long pitstops. Amateur Nascar started with Paul Sterrett grabbing the early lead until a pit stop in the second segment put Paul way back. Mike Hudson was fast but a 25 lap first heat dropped him back with Paul. President Jason Holmes was flying and wing racer Tyson Joyce overcame a poor 33 lap first heat by stringing together consistent 37 lap heats untill in the end Tyson finished three up on Paul Sterrett for the win with Mike coming back to take the last podium spot by one over Uncle Kal’s racer and recent New Zealand transplant Chris Radisich who TQed at 4.554 on the green lane. Daniel Hudson was fifth and followed by Alex Freund, Earl Wilson, Jason Holmes Jonathan Forsyth, and Cliff Kendrick. Phil Roberson led the Expert 4" race until the third when Duran put a lap on Phil and then began to pull away. Duran won with Phil second just segments ahead of Roy Hood in third. Steve Forsyth was fourth, Ira Stoker fifth and Foamy DNF. Duran won the Expert part of the combined Truck race with Alex Freund second overall and top amateur with Steve Forsyth and Ira Stoker second and third in experts. Tyson Joyce TQed in amateur and was second with Jody Freund third. Phil Roberson TQed in expert with an amazing 4.389 and Roy Hood was out with mechanical problems. Amateur GT-1 was a 12 man round robin dominated by the horsepower crazed Jason Holmes who won over Mike Hudson. Las Vegas racer and track owner Mick Antonelli impressed with an awesome performance for third and, his fast lap of 4.069 was only bettered by Jason in amateur and Duran in expert. Dennis Rios was fourth, Daniel Hudson fifth, Paul Sterrett sixth and Jonathan Forsyth seventh. In expert GT-1 Duran was clearly the class of the field, pulling away from the pack after a first heat tie with Steve Forsyth and Greg Gilbert. Greg and Steve had a great race for second that was only decided in the last two minutes as Phil Roberson and Roy Hood battled on the same lap for fourth. In the end it was Duran, Greg, Steve, Phil, Roy and Ira in that order. Amateur GT-12 was just too fast! Jason Holmes sailed smoothly to the win as chassis broke and motors burned in his wake. Mick Antonelli held off a charging Chris Radisich who just got past Dennis Rios for third. Jonathan Forsyth equaled Jason’s TQ time of 3.618 and finished fifth after some horrible carnage. Cliff Kendrick and Tyson Joyce were DNFs. Duran started fast in GT-12 expert going for the sweep. Duran’s motor went away at the end of the first heat forcing a pit stop. Mike Hudson was the leader at the first break with Greg G second Monty Ohren and Roy Hood tied for third. Steve Forsyth was out for good after two as Forsyth Racing’s weekend continued to deteriorate. One of SoCals best racers and builders, Steve Forsyth and his son Jonathan really deserve the hard luck award for this one. It seemed that if it could go wrong it did. Duran set high heat of the race with 52 and came back to take second as Roy won and Greg G got third. Monty Ohren was fourth with Mike Hudson fifth. Roy Hood took TQ points with a great 3.458. Thanks to Chris and Lenore for yet another great race!
