Uncle Kal's Underground scale races on July 21st.
SoCal USRA Scale Race, Uncle Kal’s
Underground Raceway Amateur 4" Nascar kicked off the race day at Uncle Kal’s in Monrovia. This would be the fourth SoCal race at the clean and well maintained facility, and 11 Amateur GP10 Nascars came out to play on the ultra fast Grandstand Hillclimb. Daniel Hudson and Jonathan Forsyth shared the early lead until Paul "Uncle Kal" Kalemkiarian came in and ran a monster 38 laps on red. Paul Sterrett was quietly running consistently as Daniel Hudson, Alex Freund, and Mike Hudson chased Uncle Kal. UK’s Tim Hould was herding one of the races slowest cars around the track without falling off and was keeping in the mix. In heat eight Uncle Kal was involved in a major incident and badly bent his chassis. Joe Pelan from Las Vegas grabbed Uncle Kal’s mangled car and began to straighten the chassis. Joe got Uncle Kal back in after only losing two laps but it was 1 lap too late as Paul Sterrett got by for the win with UK second and Tim Hould surviving to edge Mike Hudson for the last podium spot. Daniel Hudson was just one more back. Jonathan Forsyth was fifth and followed by Alex Freund, Charlie Colvin, and Skip Colvin who TQed at 4.449 on the designated white lane. Charlie and Skip are not related. UK’s truck racer Lars Wolfe and El Cajon’s Earl Wilson rounded out the round robin main. The expert 4" race began with a strong first heat from Gil Rivera putting Gil in the lead. Gil continued to lead until a bad heat on purple put him behind Duran and tied for second with Ira Stoker. Duran made his move in the fourth heat and put three 39 lap heats together to go into first for good. Joe Pelan from Las Vegas was a little shaky at first but settled into second behind Duran. Mike Stuart TQed at 4.386 and battled with Roy Hood for third. Roy got the third place plaque with Stu fourth. Duran, Ira and Mitch Pelan all had identical 4.390 fast time on the white lane. Mitch Pelan, Ira Stoker, early leader Gil Rivera and the broken Steve Forsyth completed the places on the main. 4.5" Nastrucks was all Duran Trujillo with Ira Stoker second and Gil Rivera third in Expert. Duran TQed with a strong 4.229. After losing seven laps with a gear problem UK’s Tim Hould came back to take the Amateur win by four over BP’s Mike Hudson with Alex Freund third and Paul Sterrett fourth. Roy Hood and Steve Forsyth were fourth and fifth respectively in Expert. Amateur Gt-1 saw an incredible 18 cars entered. This class has become extremely popular here in SoCal as it has across the country lately. The great looking JK bodies adopted this year have added to the appeal of this class. Uncle Kal’s Jonathan Forsyth and Tim Hould dominated the A Semi with Jonathan edging Tim by a half a lap. UK’s Mike Lewis and BP’s Paul Sterrett also moved up. The B semi was a rough, tough battle between UK’s Casey Scott, Jason Reynolds and BP’s Alex Freund. This semi turned seven less laps than the B semi due to the horrendous crashes and wrecks. Casey Scott won, Alex Freund was second, Jason Reynolds third and Daniel Hudson also moved up. The main was a great race long battle between Jason Reynolds, Jonathan Forsyth and Casey Scott. Jason TQed at 3.948 on white. Tim Hould was in the mix untill the fifth heat when a freak accident in the kink sent Tim’s car backwards into the bridge sidewall and bent the chassis at a 45 degree angle. Mike Lewis followed when a brake malfunction put him out in the sixth. Casey Scott and Jason Reynolds were coming fast but Jonathans great heat on blue iced it as Jonathan won by two with Jason second and Casey Scott third. Paul Sterrett, Daniel Hudson and Alex Freund were 4-5-6 with Mike Lewis and Tim Hould DNFs. Expert GT-1 was all Greg G. as he had "the CAR". Duran Trujillo led the first heats but after Greg ran a 41 on Purple and 42 on Black he really looked like the guy to beat. Roy Hood and Duran Trujillo had a great race for second as Steve Forsyth, Mitch Pelan and Joe Pelan had a very close battle for fourth. Greg ran a monster 44 laps on white and set a TQ time and track record at 3.851. In the end it was Greg with 340 laps, Roy Hood with a strong 329, just one ahead of Duran’s 328 and Steve Forsyth fourth at 322, just segments ahead of Mitch Pelan in fifth. Joe Pelan was sixth 1 behind Mitch and Gil and Ira limped home with broken rides to round out the main. Amateur GT-12 was an intense race with UK’s "Big Mike" Moore taking the first heat lead with 44 on blue as Jason Reynolds struggled on the red lane. Jonathan Forsyth answered with 46 on red to take the lead in the second. Skip Colvin ran strong and held down third for the entire race. Wing car guy Lin Hammond tried his hand at GT-12 and had a great race long battle for fourth with Mike Moore. Jason pulled ahead of Jonathan in the sixth as Jonathan slowed with motor trouble. An ultra quick motor change by Jonathan’s team manager/pit crew/Dad, Steve Forsyth kept him in the running till the end but Jason held on to win by three with Jonathan second, Skip third, Lin fourth and "Big Mike" fifth. Expert GT-12 got off to a fast start with Greg G jumping into the lead with 49 on blue. Roy, Duran and Steve Forsyth moved past Greg as he spent the second heat repeatedly running over Monty "BOW" Ohren in the donut. It was great to have Monty back racing after an absence due to severe back trouble. Monty drove from a wheelchair in the deadman area with an extension cord to reach the different lanes. Steve fell back in the fourth as Roy took the lead by one over Duran. Roy and Greg ran identical TQ times of 3.398 on white as Roy continued to stretch his lead over Greg and Duran. Greg ran high heat of 50 on white but ran out of tires and had no chance of tracking down the flying Roy Hood. Roy went on to take his first SoCal USRA Expert win by three as Greg edged Duran for second by segments. Monty was fourth with Joe and Mitch Pelan fifth and sixth. Steve Forsyth and Gil rounded out the main. Thanks to Uncle Kal’s, Greg G. and the Underground staff for another great race! See you all for the Western States Scale Championships in September!
