Spray glue boxstock, boxstock, Group 27, One motor open and Group 7
on Saturday May 12th.
We returned to home of the Y2K Nat’s. for round 5 of our 2001 series. As always the track was well prepared, the shelves were stocked and the stockings were hung by the chimney with care. Spray Glue Box Stock We had 12 racers sign up and present cars for tech inspection with Bill Taylor taking the 7 points for TQ. With 12 racers, the computer was set up to run a round robin main event. Cliff Kendrick and Jason Holmes were on in the first 2 heats and were clearly the front runners of this group. Bill Pinkston was in for heat 3 and led on the average until heat 5 when Bill Taylor made his appearance. Bill T continued to lead as Bill P faded and Jason started to make a charge at Taylor. Jason closed to within 2 laps after 10 of 12 and made up one more when he moved to the green lane. Taylor held on to win the race by 4 over Jason and 12 over Cliff. Bill Pinkston, San Diego’s Joe Chevy, David Aikens, Alan Trujillo, John Giordano, Darryl Atkins, Rick Elting, Bob Johnson and Jimmy Barnett were the other runners.
Box Stock We managed another 12-man field for the glue race with Jason Holmes picking up the TQ points. David (the masked lawyer) Aikens led off on the black lane and would lead on the average for the first 3 heats. Joe Chevy came in for heat 4 and took over the lead for the next two heats. Jason was in next and took over the lead in heat 6. Jason was in command until heat 11 of 12 when he tried to give the race away by crashing and breaking his gear. He managed to hold onto the lead and win by 7 over Joe Chevy. Joe had to borrow a motor from Jason for the last 2 heats to hold off Bill Taylor. Cliff Kendrick, David Aikens, Alan Trujillo, Bill Pinkston, Dale Garcia, Danny Garcia, Darryl Atkins, Rick Kinsella and Rory Kinsella were the other finishers.
Group 27 An overflow field of 9 racers took their best shots at qualifying and Joe Chevy came out on top. Jason Holmes and Bill Taylor led the first heat with 86’s over Rich Humphrey and Mike Graverson. Pat Ularte dropped 20 laps with mechanical problems in this first heat. These 20 laps would come into play at the end the race. Mike Graverson took over the lead in heat 2 and would lead by as much as 5 laps on the average in the middle portions of the race. While this was going on, Pat was tearing up the lanes winning 4 heats and closing in on Mike and Bill and finally slipping past Bill in heat 8. Mike held on to win by 9 over Pat (where are those 20 laps?) Ularte and Bill Taylor. Jason Holmes, Randy Thompson, Rich Humphrey, Darryl Atkin, Joe Chevy and Chuck Frederick were the other runners.
One Motor Open Another overflow field of 10 racers signed up for the One Motor class. Forrest Watchers cut Connie Aloise in qualifying with a lap of 2.0000. The race started off with Gil Gunderson running 96 laps and leading on the blue lane. Connie was in for the second heat and Forrest was in for the 3rd heat and together they set off in search of Gil. Gil would hold his lead until the 6th of 10 heats, when Forrest was able to slip by him with a 97 to 96.6 on the average. Connie was just behind them at 96 and 3rd on the average. While all this was going on, Pat Ularte was staying within striking distance of the 3 leaders. His opportunity would come in the 8th heat when Gil would have problems and let Pat past into 3rd. Forrest would hold the lead until the finish, beating Connie by 22 laps and Pat by 35. Jason Holmes, Gil, Bill Taylor, Alan Trujillo, Joe Chevy, Mike Graverson and Al Chuck were the other finishers.
Group 7 We had 5 racers turn in cars for this race and contrary to the custom here in SoCal, Carlos was not the fastest qualifier. Mike Graverson took that honor and ran the fastest lap in qualifying. When the race started, it was all Carlos. He won 7 of the 8 heats and had the fastest lap in 6 of the 8 lanes. Only Forrest was in the game with Carlos and then only just. Carlos picked up the first place win ticket by 44 over Forrest. Mike Graverson, Al Chuck and Phil Larcom were the other entries.
Track Calls My apologies to all you racers for being late in turning this report in to Jason. I have been on the road traveling and working extra hours. Sorry about the lack of qualifying times for most of the classes. Somehow, the time sheets came up missing. This month we had an equal number of racers for both box stock classes. As usual, the one motor class was bigger than the group 7 race. An unusual sight in the 27 and one motor class’ was Bill Taylor running steel cars. Bill was able to put one of them into 3rd place in the 27 race.
