Spray Glue Box Stock

We had an overflow field for the 7th consecutive month, with 11 racers paying entry fees. Bill Taylor was the last up to qualify and took the 7 points for TQ with a lap of 2.71. Cliff Kendrick and Jason Holmes were next.

With 11 entries, we had Lenore set the computer up to run our usual round robin race for this class. Jason (Stacee’s dad) Holmes started out on the orange lane and led the race on the average until the 4th heat when Bill Taylor made his appearance. Bill took over the lead on the average on the red lane and at that point, it was all over but the shouting. Bill would go on to win 7 of his 8 heats and finish 13 laps up on Jason and 26 up on 3rd place finisher Rick Elting. Bob Johnson, David Aikens, Jim Barnett, Cliff Kendrick, Darryl Atkin, Alan Trujillo, Erik Duggie and Bill Pinkston followed.

Box Stock

WHERE DID ALL THESE PEOPLE COME FROM??!!! We had 17 racers sign up for the box stock race. Bill Pinkston pulled out the motor from H..E.. double hockey sticks to lay down a new track and world record lap of 2.47. Bill Taylor and Wendell Smith were 2nd and 3rd.

With 17 entries, we even had to run a round robin semi! Move ups from the ‘B’ semi were Chuck Frederick, Rick Elting, Bill Taylor and Rich Curnutte. The move ups from the ‘A’ semi were Jim Swofford, Wendell Smith, Bill Pinkston and Cliff Kendrick. This main event was simply not as close as the lap totals show. Pinkston put his qualifier back into his car, took the lead in heat one and never looked back. The computer indicates that he ran the first 2 heats perfect to build himself a nice lead. Jim Swofford was 2nd early, but started dropping back and then spent the last part of the race testing motors for the Nats. Rick Elting moved into 2nd place in heat 3 and would close out a nice day with a 2nd place to go along with his 3rd in the spray glue race. Rich Curnutte and Chuck Frederick made good recoveries after the geek that writes this column made a bad tire choice for heat one and ruined their races. Sorry guys. Rich and Chuck made it all the way up to 3rd and 4th at the end of the race. Bill Taylor, Wendell Smith, Cliff Kendrick and Jim Swofford were the other finishers.

Group 27

Our Group 27 race had 9 entries again. We had 9 racers the last time we ran a 27 race and that was here in May. Chuck Frederick TQ’ed with a very nice lap of 2.09 (More on this in the track calls section). Richard Curnutte and Mike Graverson were the 2nd and 3rd qualifiers.

Rich Curnutte and Jim Swofford were the first heat leaders with 94 and 92 laps. Mike Graverson was in next and ran a 95 on red to take over the lead on the average. Mike would continue to lead, opening up as much as 2.3 lap lead on the average after 4 heats. Mike then moved to the bottom gutters and started giving the laps back. Mike didn’t do so good on the black lane, dropping behind Richard on the average while Richard was sitting out. Richard was back in on red in the next heat and proceeded to add a lap a heat to his lead over the final 3 heats. Jim would have a problem on green during the same heat and allowed Chuck to move into 3rd. Jim held onto 4th with Jason Holmes, Pat Ularte, Wendell Smith, Darryl Atkin and Bill Taylor the other finishers.

One Motor Open

A very nice field of 7 presented cars for this race. It should be noted that several of the regular or semi regulars did not show up for the race. We very easily could have had 10 or more entries. Mike Graverson picked up the 7 points for TQ with a lap of 2.09. Tore Anderson and Gil Gunderson were next.

Gil Gunderson started on blue and led by an unbelievable 8 laps after the first heat, but broke during the 2nd heat and was out. Tore moved into the lead in heat 2 and just pounded the rest of the field into the ground, continually expanding his lead to win by 35 laps. Rich Curnutte got off to a bad start on red (I didn’t do it this time!) but made a tremendous recovery to take the 2nd spot after 2 heats. He would swap the place with Mike Graverson a couple of times until Mike hit black and dropped from contention putting Richard back into 2nd. Pat Ularte picked up the final podium spot ahead of Mike, Alan Trujillo, Darryl Atkin and Gil Gunderson.

Group 7

A smaller than normal field of only 4 signed up. Phil Larcom was the only qualifier and takes the 7 TQ points.

This race report was easy to write up. Forrest Watchers led the race from start to finish, had the fastest lap in 6 of the 8 heats and the fastest lap of the race. Phil Larcom, Rich Curnutte and Al (Owl Chump) Chuck were the other racers

Track Calls

Whoops!

TQ for one motor open, 2.097.

TQ for G27, 2.094.

Hey! Pinkston! Either you tell us all how to make a motor like that, or we won’t let you play with us any more. Seriously, nice motor Bill and congratulations on your world record.

The wing car group will be taking some time off for the Nats. Good luck to all the racers.
