APRIL 7 - Spray glue
boxstock, boxstock, G 12, 1 motor G7,G7
Slot Car City Las Vegas, NV April 7 & 8, 2001 We packed our bags and headed off to Las Vegas to join the NHRA in providing this desert city with some top caliber motor sports competition. Spray Glue Box Stock The racing weekend started with 11 racers signing up and qualifying for the spray glue box stock race. Chuck Panno was TQ with a lap of 3.09. Monty Ohren and Las Vegas local Tyson Joyce were 2nd and 3rd. The field of 11 racers forced us to run a round robin race. Track owner Mick Antonelli was the early leader. Richard Arcand held the 2nd spot for several heats but he faded from contention in the 4th heat. Fast qualifier, Chuck Panno learned his lesson in the last race and took the deep sit out. He came in for heat 4 was immediately on the pace in 2nd place on the average. Bill Taylor was back in the next heat and he and Chuck spent the next 4 heats in hot pursuit of Mick. Chuck and Bill were slowly closing the gap to Mick until heat 9 when Mick moved to the purple lane and started playing bumper cars with the back markers. This allowed both Chuck and Bill past. In heat 10, Bill ripped off a 50 on yellow to move into the lead. He followed up with a 49 on orange to take the win ticket by 6 laps. Chuck came home in 2nd place with Mick getting hammered in the final 3 heats and finished a disappointing 3rd. Jason Holmes took 4th, slipping past both Richard Arcand and Rick Elting in the last heat. Box Stock We cleaned up the racetrack, put down some of that awful sticky stuff, narrowed up the tires and went glue racing. For the first time this year, the glue race outdrew the spray glue race with 13 racers presenting cars for tech inspection. Bill Taylor picked up the 7 points for TQ with a lap of 2.92. Jason Holmes was next more than a tenth back and Phil Larcom was 3rd another tenth back with one of Jason's practice cars. The 13 entries was one short of what we needed to run semi's, so a big round robin was entered into the computer. Jason took the white lane to start and took the lead on the average. He would hold that lead, even though he was sitting out, until heat 5 when Bill Taylor came in and took lead away. Mick (Speed Tricks) Antonelli also slipped by Jason on the average in that heat. Jason repassed Mick in the next heat and remained close to Bill till the end. Bill lead from his first heat until the end beating Jason by 4 laps. Jason was 2nd with Rich Arcand taking 3rd and Mick picking up 4th after a bad heat in orange dropped him behind Rich. Cobalt 12 Mike Graverson was the fastest qualifier of the 6 entries with a lap of 2.44. Jason Holmes and Bill Taylor were 2nd and 3rd. This was a very close race for the first 6 heats. Bill, Jason and Mike were always within 3 laps of each other, with Bill doing most of the leading. The first break came in heat 6 when Bill over glued the lead on and dropped from 1st to 4th, with Mike moving to 2nd. Problems continued for Bill on yellow and Mike also had problems on green allowing Phil Larcom into 2nd place. Jason continued to run strong and took an 11-lap win over Phil, Bill and Mike. One Motor Open Sunday morning and it was time for a little bit of open motor racing. Connie Aloise TQ'ed with a 2.20 second lap. Randy Thompson and Mike Graverson followed. Connie led heat 1, but Mike took over and led the race until the end of heat 4 when he collected a deslotted racecar on the straight and knocked out a magnet. Randy then laid down a 91-lap heat on black to move past Connie and take the lead. Randy kept laying down the big numbers to take the win by 63 over Connie. Pat Ularte came home in 3rd with Alan Trujillo, Jason Holmes and Mike Graverson taking up the lesser positions. Group 7 A bit more of the old liquid traction and we were off to never never land. Carlos (who else?) ran the fast time in qualifying with a lap of 1.88. Scott Fisher and Phil Larcom were the 2nd and 3rd qualifiers. The race started with Scott Fisher leading the first heat. Forrest Watchers took over after 2 and led through the mid point of heat 5 when Carlos went by (or was that by-by). Scott was recovering from early heat problems and by heat 6 was back into 2nd place. Carlos continued on to win the race by 24 laps over Scott. Forrest Watchers, Randy Thompson, Mike Graverson and Phil Larcom were the other finishers. Track Calls For the first time this year, there were more entries for the glue box stock race (13) than for the spray glue race (11). This month the one motor and regular opens had the same number of entries, 6. Normally we have more One Motor Opens that Group 7 entries. Las Vegas local Scott Fisher stopped by on Saturday and was drafted into race directing the C-12 race. On Sunday he took a break from his new calling, RC racing, and was seen building his Group7 car during the One Motor race. He was rewarded with 2nd place. Hopefully, we will see more of Scott in the future. Cookies, Connie brought cookies! Where did Bill Pinkston go? He was seen napping at the track Saturday morning during the spray glue race, but just disappeared. Many thanks to Connie, Forrest, Pat and Tyson for volunteering to marshal the C-12 race.
