September 15 - Spray glue boxstock,
boxstock and G 27
Spray Glue Box Stock This has been one of our more popular classes all year and we had another large field of 13 racers turn cars into tech inspection. Bill Taylor picked up the 7 TQ points with a new track record of 3.04. Rick Elting and Richard Arcand were 2nd and 3rd. The computer was set up to run a round robin race. Track owner Mick Antonelli started out on the yellow lane and was the early leader on the average. He would hold the lead on the average through the early heats while holding off challenges from Richard Arcand and Bill Pinkston. Bill Taylor was in for heat 6 of 13 and took off in pursuit of Mick and finally taking the lead on the average during heat 9. Bill built up a 7-lap lead that Mick cut to only 3 laps in the last heat. Rick Elting started off with a bad heat on red turning only 33 laps, but fast consistent heats after that allowed him to pick off one racer after another to finish 3rd. Jason Holmes, Alan Trujillo, David Aikens, Tyson Joyce, Mark Eastman, Oliver Sohmbiculer, Richard Arcand, Darryl Atkin, Art Richardson and Bill Pinkston were the other finishers.
Box Stock We had another nice field of 12 racers for this class. Jason Holmes was the final qualifier and picked up the TQ points. Mick Antonelli started on the yellow lane again and was the early leader. Bill Taylor was again a deep sit out and was in for heat 3 of 12 and again was forced to content with Mick’s rapid pace. Jason had decided to start on white and was sitting out the middle heats. He returned to the track in heat 6 and was trailing both Mick and Bill on the average. Bill finally got past Mick in heat 7 and would lead until heat 9 when Jason ran a perfect heat on purple with 54 laps and pass both Bill and Mick. Mick would also get past Bill in heat 9 as Bill continued to battle traffic (and if I may admit, just plain bad driving). Jason would go on to win the race with Mick 2nd and Bill 3rd. Dale Garcia, Richard Arcand, Rick Elting, David Aikens, Darryl Atkin, Alan Trujillo, Art Richardson, Tyson Joyce and Bill Pinkston were the other racers.
Group 27 Jason Holmes picked up the TQ points over a small field of only 5 racers. The first heat was ugly with the leader turning only 78 laps. The 2nd heat was better with race leader Randy Thompson running a 90 lap heat on blue. Randy would run a number of 90 lap heats and win the race by 20 laps. Jason and Mike Graverson were to trade the 2nd spot for most of the race with Mike finally taking the spot for good when Jason had a bad heat on black. Tyson Joyce would pick up 4th in his first cobalt race. Pat Ularte would drop out with mechanical problems.
One Motor Open A small field of open racers returned to the track on Sunday morning to race open class cars. Mike Graverson would TQ with a lap of 2.210. Randy Thompson was next with a lap of 2.218. This was just a preview of what was to be a very exciting race.
As I review the lap charts to write this report, I see that Mike and Randy traded the lead back and forth for the whole race and were never more than 9 laps apart and usually within 5 at the end of the heat. However, they could not count out Pat Ularte. Pat would keep them honest, staying just a handful of laps behind the 2 leaders until he broke down in heat 5. Mike would start the last heat with a 4-lap lead on Randy but would only run 15 laps on white after his motor slowed and would drop to 3rd. Randy would suffer with traffic problems on the red lane, running only 68 laps allowing Pat to close to within 4 laps of Randy after a perfect heat on the blue lane. Call the finishing order Randy, Pat, Mike and Alan Trujillo, after giving up way to many laps on red, he ran consistent and competitive heats the rest of the way, but was relegated to the final place.
Group 7 The drivers decided not to qualify but to give the TQ points to the fastest race lap. Forrest Watchers ran the quick lap and was awarded the 7 points with a lap of 2.189.
Forrest followed up on his win at the Nat’s in the Senior open race to score a very convincing win in this race. Forrest would win all but one heat and run the fastest lap of the race to win by 83 laps over Mike Graverson. Phil Larcom and Al Chuck were the other racers.
Track Calls What happened? TQ for the spray glue box stock race was a 3.04. TQ for the glue version was 3.06 Monty Ohren was back to the track this month after sitting out several months with back problems. He is not yet able to race, but he was able to pit Jason to a win in the Box Stock race. We would like to welcome back Mark Eastman. Mark is a Las Vegas racer who has been inactive for a couple of years. After racing the spray glue race he climbed into the booth and was the race director for the glue race. Thanks Mark and welcome back to the wars. Oliver Sohmbiculer also raced with us this week. Oliver is from Austria and was in Las Vegas on business when the attacks on our country kept him here longer than he had anticipated.
