So Cal USRA Scale Race, Uncle Kal’s Underground Raceway
Monrovia CA January 26, 2002

So Cal USRA’s 2002 season kicked off at Uncle Kal’s on Monrovia and saw the biggest turnout in recent memory.  Amateur 4” Nascar and amateur  GT-1 required round robin semis and the Expert classes had the biggest fields since the classes were split into Am and Ex.

Casey Scott won the B semi with Big John Estopellen, Earl Wilson and Charlie Colvin moving up after a little computer trouble and the resulting controversy. Lars Wolf took the win in the A semi followed by Daniel Hudson, Richard Estopellan and Phil Phillips after the tie breaker.  The main was fast and clean with Daniel Hudson scoring fast time of 4.390 but Casey Scott stayed in the slot and won by 13 over Daniel. Lars Wolf was third followed by Phil Phillips, Richard Estopellen, Earl Wilson, Big John and Charlie Colvin.

Expert 4” was an intense round robin main with Steve Forsyth, Roy Hood, Duran Trujillo and Greg G running at the front in an extremely close race. Duran faded back with motor trouble as Steve, Roy and Greg battled for the win. Roy topped Steve by 3’ with Greg one more back in third. Duran, Mike Stuart, Mike Hudson, Chris Radisich and Phil Roberson rounded out the top eight.

4.5” Nascar returned for 2002 after a year as trucks. Daniel Hudson dominated the amateur race and won with Jerry Johnson from Arizona second and Alex Freund Third.

Experts was lead from wire to wire by Gil Rivera with Bakersfield’s Phil Roberson second, and Chris Radisich third.with Duran less than 10 feet behind in 4th.

The Amateur GT-1 B semi was a “Johnson and Johnson” battle between “Big Brian” Johnson and Jerry Johnson from Arizona. Jerry won with “Big Brian”, Alex Freund and Phil Phillips moving up. Casey Scott won the A semi with Paul Abbey, John Emmons and Geoff Smith making the move up as well. Casey Scott diced briefly with Geoff Smith in the forth heat and then headed off into the sunset to win by 12. Geoff Smith who hasn’t picked up a controller in six months was second, Jerry Johnson third, Phil Phillips fifth and followed by Alex, Paul Abbey and Brian Johnson.

Expert GT-1 was a 13 car round robin won by Greg G by four over roy Hood with Duran 5 more back in third. Mike Hudson was fourth, Steve and Jonathan Forsyth, Paul Sterrett, Radisich, the out of retirement Alan Ohren who suffered from mechanical ills, Tore Anderson, Gil Rivera, Foamy and Jason Holmes filled out the field.

Amateur GT-12 was more Casey Scott with a 17 lap win over “Hurricane” Earl with Mike Lewis third.  Brian Johnson was involved in a first heat incident and went to the pits but fixed it and came all the way back from last to take fourth ahead of Alex Freund, Dennis Rios and greg Noah.

Expert GT-12 was another 13 car round robin. From the time the power went on Greg G. looked like he had the car to beat. Roy Hood, Steve Foirsyth, Monty Ohren and Alan Ohren all looked good as well. Greg finished on white with 387 and sat out to see if anyone catch him.  Alan was flying but came up a few laps short as Greg won, Steve Forsyth was third, Monty fourth, Roy Hood fifth after some problems. Duran was sixth, John Torre Anderson seventh and New Zealand’s Chris Radisich, who just made the move up to expert were in the top eight.
