Santee Model Car
Raceway Santee, CA July 13, 2002
We moved to the eastern suburbs of
San Diego to race on Santee’s excellent King Cobra racetrack. I
think it was a combination of the Nat’s coming in about 2 weeks
and the fear of racing on something different that kept the overall
entries down. Fortunately the “locals” stepped up to the panel and
they made a very good showing for themselves.
Spray Glue G-12 First up
was our spray glue race for G-12 cars. Since we don’t run qualifying
for this class it was straight to the 11-man round robin main. David
Aikens led by 3 laps after the first heat followed by local jets
Nick Richardson, Tim Peck and Joe Chevy. David would go to the sit
out and leave it to the locals. Earl Wilson took his turn in the
box in heat 3 and immediately moved to the lead on the average by
throwing down a pair of 55’s. Monty Ohren was in next and was putting
serious pressure on Earl as they moved through the middle of the
race. Monty slipped past Earl on the average in heat 7. In heat
8, Joe Chevy turned the high heat and fastest lap of the race and
these 3 were now separated by only .2 on the average. Joe moved
to the lead in heat 9 as Earl broke down and Monty just could not
keep up. Joe would continue to lead and win the the race by 14 laps
over Monty. Nick Richardson would get past Tim Peck in the last
heat for the final podium spot. David Aikens was 5th and Earl’s
problems in the last 3 heats would see him slip down to 6th. Jimmy
Barnett, Evan McKee, Rich Heisel, Dave Rodger and Tim Bunch rounded
out the field.
G-12 Joe Chevy was the
fast qualifier cutting Jason Holmes by only .001 and David Aikens
by .003.
Fortunately we had enough marshalls
to cover and we were able to run straight up. Jason was fast early,
but a 20-second stop to fix his car put him 7 laps down early. Pat
Ularte, Joe Chevy and Dale Garcia raced close for several heats.
Dale was slow on the top half of the track and was dropped by the
leaders. Jason continued to lose laps until heat 4, when he laid
down a 61 to move into 3rd place only 4 laps back. Jason laid down
another 60 in the final heat and Joe could not keep up and would
have to settle for 2nd. Pat would take the final podium spot with
Art Richardson, Dale Garcia and David Aikens the other racers.
One Motor Open This is
another class without qualifying and it was straight to the racing.
This was the Pat and Phil show. Pat and Phil lead early as the rest
of the field suffered from various maladies. Pat lead the first
2, but then it was Phil moving to the front and just abusing the
rest of the field by running consistent hi 90’s and 100+ lap heats.
Pat would have to settle for 2nd with Jason Holmes in 3rd. Monty
Ohren took 4th with Tore and Mickey Johnson following way, way back
Track Calls Many thanks
to all the racers from Santee who volunteered to marshall all the
races.
We picked up 2 new members. Tim Peck
and Dave Rodger. Tim was on pace early in the spray glue race but
slipped back to 4th. Not a bad effort.
