SoCal USRA Scale Race #8 Santee Slot car raceway
Santee, California August 23, 2003

Round eight of SoCal USRA’s 2003 scale series returned to Santee. This time instead of racing on the little hillclimb all classes were run on the super fast but challenging King Cobra.

Amateur 4” Nascar drew a strong field of 24 for the double round robin main. Daniel Hudson and Jimmy Ross started first and second after one. Robert Park took over as Jimmy sat out and Daniel fell back. Jimmy Ross, Kieren Dale from New Zealand, and Tim Peck were all looking like contenders until Jerry Johnson started ripping off 41 lap heats and pulled away to win by nine. Jimmy Ross was second, Tim Peck third, Kieren Dale fourth, Dennis Rios fifth, Phil Phillips sixth, and Earl Wilson and Alex Freund rounding out the top eight.

Expert 4” was all Duran as he had nine laps on the field by the halfway point. Mike Hudson took advantage of Chris Radisich’s rough heats on purple and black to take second away as Steve Forsyth got by Paul Sterrett at the last moment for fourth.  Gil Rivera and Chuck Panno both suffered mechanical troubles with Gil finishing sixth and Chuck a DNF.

Amateur 4.5” drew 20 cars and Jerry Johnson got things going with an astounding 37 on red! Tim Peck came in and started a race long duel with Jerry. Phil Phillips and Jimmy Ross had a battle of their own going on about four laps behind the lead duo. Another two laps back battling in fifth and sixth were Kieren Dale and Brian Delperdang. The race ended in that order although places swapped continuously. Earl Wilson and Alex Freund again ended seventh and eight. Robert Park was ninth with Hector Cuadras tenth, Paul Abbey was eleventh and Vince Briant twelfth.  Brian Lent was thirteenth, Daniel Rodger fourteenth, Derreck Peck fifteenth and followed by Bob Abbey, Kenny Rodger, Ron Winkleman and Robert Stubbs.

Expert 4.5” was another win by Duran, but not an easy one. After two segments Jonathan Forsyth and Duran were on the same lap and battling for the lead. Jonathan stayed close to Duran until he gave up some ground on purple and black but still managed to hold off a late charge from Chris Radisich. Jonathan was second, Radisich third, Gil Rivera fourth, Mike Hudson fifth and Paul Sterrett sixth.

Thirteen racers signed up for Amateur GT-1, and Jerry Johnson came out and made a statement with an awesome 44 lap heat on white. Jerry sat out and Jimmy Ross took over with Keiren Dale and Phil Phillips looking strong as well.  Dennis Rios hit the track in the sixth and started running consistently high lap totals. Jerry Johnson came back in during heat seven and ran three consecutive 45 lap heats. Jerry seemed to slow in the last three heats as Jimmy Ross reeled him in and Dennis held on for a two lap win with Jerry Johnson just holding off Jimmy Ross for second and Kieran Dale turning in another strong finish with fourth. Phil Phillips drove consistently into fifth, three behind Keiren with John Emmons another five back in sixth.  Derrick Peck took seventh with Hector Quadras eighth.  Robert Park probably would have been a factor had it not been for a disastrous 20 lap heat on red. Robert did manage to set high heat of the race with a 46 on white but finished ninth ahead of Paul Abbey in tenth. Earl Wilson, Brian Johnson and Bob Abbey rounded out the field.

Expert GT-1 was a great wire to wire battle between Duran Trujillo and Chris Radisich. Radisich nipped Duran by sections at the end with Roy Hood third, local ,  Chuck Panno was fourth, and Steve Forsyth fifth. Mike Hudson and Jonathan Forsyth followed in sixth and seventh with Jason Stone eighth. Paul Sterrett was a DNF for ninth after looking competitive early and Gil Rivera DNFed for tenth.

Amateur GT-12 was a nine car round robin with Keiren Dale and Jerry Johnson setting the pace and “Big Brian” and Earl Wilson trying to keep up.  Jerry took another win with Keiren three back in second, and Brian Johnson third. Earl Wilson took fourth with John Emmons fifth and Hector Cuadras sixth. A five lap heat on orange forced Dennis Rios to settle for seventh with Phil Phillips, who was fast early a DNF for eighth and Paul Abbey ninth.

Expert GT-12 was fast and wild with Radisich and Casey Scott looking like the two fastest until handling woes dropped Casey back. Roy Hood, Monty and Alan Ohren all chased Radisich but couldn’t catch him as Chris pulled away to win by six with Roy Hood second, Monty only one back in third and Alan just one more back in fourth. Close racing indeed. Steve Forsyth finished fifth with Casey Scott and Jason Stone, who had the two fastest cars in the race were sixth and seventh respectively after dealing with mechanical troubles. Jonathan Forsyth was a DNF.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this race a success!!!
