SoCal USRA Scale Race #11 November 22, 2003 Green Flag Raceway, Hesperia Calif.

SoCal USRA's final scale race of 2003 was held at Green Flag Raceway in the high desert town of Hesperia.

As usual the competition kicked off with Amateur 4" Nascar and Santa Maria's Dennis Rios jumped into the lead with 40 on the green lane. BP's Jimmy Ross also looked strong as he took over in the second and everything became a blurr as the 19 car double round robin got into full swing. When the dust cleared young Colin Herzig got the win with Jimmy Ross second, "Big Brian" Johnson third, Alex Freund fourth, and Phil Phillips fifth. Andrew Ross took sixth, Tim Peck seventh, Daniel Hudson eighth and Tim Hould ninth.  Gene Martin rounded out the top ten. Arizona's Jerry Johnson took the series title by an amazing 95 points while Colin barely edged Phil Phillips for second.

In Expert Mike Hudson looked like the guy to beat as he ran 43 on the tough red lane and set fast time of the race in the process.  Jerry Johnson tried his hand at Expert and was definitly in the hunt. Mike ran into trouble in the third and the steady New Zealander Chris Radisich pulled even as series leader Duran Trujillo chased Jerry for third but with a commanding lead needed only sixth to win the series title and saw no reason to push it. Radisich motored away to win by seven over Mike Hudson with Jerry Johnson third.   Duran cruised to fourth with a satisfied look on his face to take another Championship. How many in a row is that now? Steve Forsyth was fifth, Paul Sterrett sixth, Chuck Panno seventh and retiring Western States and National Champion Gil  Rivera rounded out the field.

Tim Peck and Jimmy Ross battled throughout the ten car round robin with Tim edging Jimmy by less than a lap with "Uncle Phil" Phillips taking the last podium spot six back.  Andrew Ross finished fourth, seven ahead of Daniel Hudson with printmeister Paul Abbey steppin' up for sixth. Alex Freund came in seventh, Earl Wilson eighth, with Robert Stubbs and Bob Abbey's concourse cars filling out the ten car field.

Expert drew a full field of great looking cars and Paul Sterrett gave Duran a run for his money as Radisich chased the lead pair around the fast little Kingelman.  Duran won another one over Paul with Chris a little more back in third and took the Championship by 170 points  with Paul Sterrett impressing with second over Radisich in third. The same order in the race and the series. Gil Rivera was a strong fourth with "Crazy" making a rare 4.5 Nascar appearance  to take sixth with Mike Hudson and Green Flag local Steve Forsyth taking seventh and eighth.

Amateur GT-1 was a big eighteen car double round robin with Jimmy Ross taking a big win away from Colin Herzig with an incredibly consistent run. Even Colin's great 46 laps on yellow in the last heat still left the Arcadia youngster two behind Jimmy for second place.  BP's Daniel Hudson was third with the "Big Guy" Brian Johnson taking fourth  as he continues to improve with every race. Another big dude, Monrovia's Tim Hould started slow but found his pace to take fifth as Dennis Rios finished sixth, Phil Phillips seventh, Paul Abbey eighth, trucker T.J. Albu ninth, and James Grinstead tenth. Bob Abbey and Gene "Mountain Man" Martin completed the top twelve. Jerry Johsnon took the series title by 100 points with Daniel Hudson second and Phil Phillips third.

Expert GT-1 has seen some hard racing between Duran and Radisich earlier on but Duran definitly had the upper hand going into the last round and without quite a few "tweeners" Chris was going to have to settle for second in the '03 series. Two wild cards, Alan Ohren and the always fast Casey Scott entered the mix with Alan taking the three lap victory with Chris second and Casey third. Veteran Roy Hood cruised to fourth as Jerry Johnson came in fifth. Jonathan Forsyth sixth and Duran a few sections back in seventh. Mike Hudson, Paul Sterrett and Steve Forsyth completed the ten car feature.

Moving on to the really fast cars, Amateur GT-12 was a win by Colin Herzig with Arcadia's Phil Phillips second and T.J. Albu steppin' it up for third. T.J. has been steadily finishing higher and higher since he has returned to SoCal USRA racing and should be a legitimate threat next season.  Dennis Rios took fourth with Tim Hould fifth, Wayne Shaw sixth, Charly Scrogum seventh and "Big Brian" filling out the top eight.

Defending champ Roy Hood and Chris Radisich were neck and neck in the series points going into this the last race and the victor would take the GT-12 plaque home after the December banquet. Roy showed determination and grit as he beat the faster Radisich on the    gutter lanes to take the win by two and win the series championship by a mere ten points over Chris. Jerry Johnson showed he will be a force in expert  next season as he took the last podium spot by five over Casey Scott with Jonathan Forsyth fifth. Jonathan's dad Steve Forsyth came in sixth with Monty Ohren and Ventura's Jason Stone seventh and eighth.

The Slixx Decal Challenge was taken by Robert Stubbs in Amateur with Bob Abbey second and Paul Sterrett in Expert with Mike Hudson runner up.

See you all at the banquet and good luck next season!
