2005 Wing Round 6 - June 10/11/12 - Buena Park Raceway

Buena Park Raceway,  Buena Park, CA, June 10/11/12, 2005

Spray Glue G-12
The first race of the weekend was held Friday night and drew 13 entries. Our rules call for this class to be run as a round robin event, regardless of the number of entries.

Sam Rackham made one of his rare appearances and won the first heat running on the white lane and immediately went to the sit outs. Jonathon Forsyth made his appearance in heat 3 and by heat 4 had taken the lead on the average. Jonathon’s lead even survived a couple of slower heats down on purple and black. Meanwhile Sam, Kenny Richins and Josh Bauer were running close for 2nd place on the average. As the race moved into the closing heats it looked like Jonathon was going to take the win ticket, but a big crash and a broken axle put him out in his final heat. Kenny was just coming back in and had bad heats on both red and green dropping him from contention. Heat 10 ended with Josh “getten er done” and leading by 2 over Sam. Josh added to that lead in heat 11. In heat 12 Josh simply could not get his car around the track and dropped 7 laps and the lead to Sam. The final heat would start with these 2 racers only a lap apart. Josh would turn a 60 on white, but Sam had a 62 on orange. Sam collected the win ticket with Josh taking 2nd. Steve Forsyth took the final podium spot ahead of Bob Maxwell, Rick Elting, Kenny Richins, Jonathon, Duran, Big Brian Johnson, Bob Johnson, Evan McKee, Monty Ohren and Adam Kirchhoffer.

Group 12.
G-12 started early Saturday morning and from the 15 entries it was Colorado’s Larry Blanton taking the TQ with a time of 2.476.  Making the transfer from the “A” semi were Jim Swofford, Jason Holmes, Larry Blanton and Sam Rackham. From the “B” semi we had Mickey Johnston, Brian Johnson, Wendell Smith and Joe Lisciandro.

Mickey took over the lead during the second heat by running a 62 on red. Jim Swofford would move into 2nd and Sam would take 3rd and between them they kept the heat on Mickey. Jim would burn one down in heat 7 and dropped from contention. Sam would take over 2nd but was going to settle for 2nd behind Mickey. Larry had some early race problems and was not able to make up all of the lost laps and settled for 3rd only 6 laps behind Mickey. Jim took 4th ahead of Wendell, Brian, Jason and Joe.

For the second race of the day we 8 racers turn cars into tech. And it was Benny Justice turning a TQ lap of 2.021. By the end of the 2nd heat Jim Swofford had pulled out a 7 lap lead on Rich Curnutte and Al Chuck with Benny all the way down in 6th and 10 laps down. Benny went to the box and pulled to within 4 laps of Jim and moving into 2nd after 3. These 2 ran close together with Rich Curnutte slowly closing in on these 2. Jim’s motor slowed in heat 7 and Benny went past and into the lead. Jim went to his box and put in a motor that ran a race tying high heat of 75 laps. Benny ran a 74 in that final heat which was just enough to take the win ahead of Jim with Rich just 1 lap behind Jim and 2 behind Benny. Phil Larcom was 4th and only 9 laps behind Benny. Al Chuck was the best of the rest ahead of Rich Humphries, Kenny Richins and Joe Lisciandro.

Group 27
For the final race of the day we managed 8 entries and we let Beuf TQ with a 1.923.

This one was real easy to call. It was all Beuf, all the time. He led after the 1st heat and was only challenged once in the middle of the race. Kenny Richins ran 2nd early but faded and Larry Blanton came thru into 2nd. Benny Justice moved into 3rd late ahead of Kenny, Bill Brown, Wendell Smith, Rich Curnutte and Jim Swofford.

Chris had the track open early on Sunday morning and had the coffee ready as we all slowly filled up the pit spaces and got our irons plugged in.

One Motor Open S/P
We could only manage 7 entries for this event. This is way off the average for this class this year.

The race started with Josh Bauer and Rick Elting taking a small lead in the 1st heat. In heat 3 Josh could not get around black and dropped 19 laps to Bill Taylor, the new leader. As the race progressed Josh was able to run down everyone but Bill and Bill took the win by 9 over Josh with Kenny Richins in 3rd. Rick Elting took 4th ahead of Jason Holmes, Chris Radisich and Jim Ward.

With 13 entries it’s pretty hard to get a good sense of the race until it’s about half way thru.

After 7 it was Randy Thompson leading on the average over Beuf and then Benny with Bill Pinkston, Tore and Bob Everett within a lap of each other fighting for 4th place. Benny had started the race on red and was the 1st one done and had to wait to see if the race would come back to him. Beuf continued to chase Randy without making up any laps until Randy got to the bottom gutters. Beuf was running on orange and white and managed to move past Randy into the lead. Beuf was now done and leading and it was looking pretty good. Randy was just to far back to have a go at the lead leaving Beuf with a 27-lap victory. Benny held on to 3rd with Tore leading the rest of the field.

Pro
There were 14 racers having a go for it and Benny Justice TQ’d with a 1.627

Randy Thompson, Benny, Larry Blanton and Kenny Richins moved out of “A” Semi. Beuf, Bob Everett, Phil Larcom and Forrest Watchers moved out of “B” semi.

As the race started, it was Forrest and Benny taking a slim lead over the pack. These 2 ran within a lap of each other for the 1st 3 heats. Benny then moved to purple for heat 4 and just could not keep up the pace and started his long slow slide down the field. Randy made a real good run on red (his best heat of the day) to catch Forrest at 663 after 5. Forrest then put the stick to it and in each of the last 3 heats he was able to put a few laps on Randy to secure his victory. Randy took 2nd with Beuf 3rd. Benny faded to 4th ahead of Phil Larcom, Larry Blanton, Kenny Richins and Bob Everett.
